Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War-its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis. Warren popularized the slight misquote (of the last word), “I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards.”Ībraham Lincoln (Febru– April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. The saying was often repeated by American jurist and politician Earl Warren (1891-1974). Lincoln was saying that he was a “slow walker” (made progress slowly), but that he didn’t “walk back” (go back on the progress that was made). Lincoln, when asked recently if the emancipation proclamation was a finality, replied-’I am a slow walker, but I never walk back.’” The following anecdote appeared in a January 1864 newspaper: President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
